[Push the Boundaries]

In this artwork I reference the text 'push the boundaries' because I wanted to revisit a 'fermented' idea from my early ideas as a teen about what art first meant to me. When I was in year 11 at 16 years of age ( 2010) I defined  Abstract Expressionism as being about 'pushing the boundaries' & not abiding by traditional representation. Since then my idea of pushing the boundaries is a general principle I remind myself to live by. Making this work was about taking time to re-think how I can best push my limits to do the most good I can do in my life.

Recommended Texts:

Highly recommend you to read/watch:

The Most Good you can do (2015) - by Peter Singer (b. 1946), Australian ethical & political philosopher - this text is about Effective Altruism: "A philosophy and social movement which applies evidence and reason to working out the most effective ways to improve the world". (pg. 4)

Ways of seeing (1972) - by John Berger (1926-2017), English art critics, novelist, painter & poet - This TV series explains the way we see visual images in relation to consumerism, reproduction, photography, painting and the female nude.

Art/Trauma/Representation (2009) - by Griselda Pollock (b. 1949), Canadian & British art historian - This text discusses personal and historical trauma as traces of an event that can be sensed in images (or art), and how experiences of trauma can be found in art.

Scene of the Crime (1997) - by Ralph Rugoff (b. 1957), American curator - This text discusses how traces in images (or art) can be thought of as clues in a crime scene and the artist as an investigator looking to restore meaning to a scene of traumatic chaos.
